The Weekly Digs #240

by Becky

Most of my week I spent doing a deep clean on my pantry. I scrubbed down the outside of each of our 5 gallon buckets to get rid of dust and dirt. The main culprits are the gamma seal lids which have so many little crevices. It’s not a job I enjoy, it needs to be done every six months or else it gets really bad!

Since we have 60 of these buckets under our countertop, it took forever. Six hours the first day but that’s with lots of set backs and needing to eat, do homeschool, feed a baby, change a diaper, etc. Riggs decided when I was washing a lid to stick his hands in a bucket of wheat, grab it, and shake it all over the floor. It was a good time. I had forgotten what this stage of infant was like!

Next he grabbed my rag out of the bucket of soapy water and shook that around. It was hard to keep him out of everything. He was having a fun time! I finally had a realization that I should put the bucket of soapy water on the counter where he couldn’t reach it. I also stopped taking the lids off to wash them and instead just wash them with the rag as they were on top of the bucket.

On day two of cleaning, I finished cleaning and labeling the buckets. That was a big feat. By the end, I had the boys help me because I wanted them to realize how much work it was to clean, label, and organize everything. Hopefully they will be more mindful of putting things away in the right spots.

Another reason the panty needs a deep clean is because my kids hide food in there. When they earn money, they like to go to the store and get treats. With having other siblings around, they have learned that they need to hide their treats so they don’t disappear.

So oftentimes they will hide them somewhere in our pantry and many months later I will find remnants of what they had hidden in the form of crumbs on the floor and all over the buckets.

I also recorded some of this process of cleaning and organizing. This isn’t my normal thing to share, so I’m still debating a bit on if it will ever make it onto YouTube.

It rained 4 days which is why I had a lot of inside time. I had to go outside for a few minutes each day for my sanity and do something in the garden.  So I weeded and watered seedlings.

We also pulled out the kale, the mache, and spinach. I am getting beds prepped for planting tomatoes.

It was just too wet to do much else out there.

We had quite a few family things happening this week too- a track meet to go to, Cruz had prom this weekend, Cam and I took some time to go out on a date. It was a good refresh and week to lay low but I’m ready for better weather and to get out in the garden again.

I have a lot to get caught up on this coming week. I will definitely share that with you as it happens. Have a great week friends!

I know the focus of the blog is the gardens, but I like the little glimpses of your homesteading life. I’ve often wondered exactly how you got everything done and your day in the life was cool to watch. So I would like to see the cleaning video complete with Riggs help. :))

Have you heard of lock boxes? A container or insulated bag that you can put a lock on the zip. They’re popular in schools/communal kitchens so people can protect their goodies.

You do such a good job of being understanding about little mischiefs.

Also there is a massive market for cleaning videos, people like to clean alongside a form of motivation, or to just enjoy the satisfaction of watching it.

Ooh prom, how exciting for him!

I love getting out into a summer’s rain when the air is full of energy, but it is sometimes impractical.

I haven’t heard of lock boxes but it sounds like my kids need those! I’ll have to look them up!

I used to tell my kids if you don’t want anyone to find the goodies hide it in the veggie bin, but I don’t think that will work for them. LOL
