Goals for 2019

2018 had a lot of both successes and failures but overall it was a really good year. I grew more in the garden than ever before, the blueberries and blackberries really started taking off, and we made some good progress on renovating our bathroom.

Here are my 2019 Goals

Garden:

  1. Keep a record of how much produce gets put up for the year. After 2017, I knew I needed more of everything- tomatoes in particular. I did preserve way more of everything in 2018. However, I wish I had kept a record of how many jars I canned, how much I dehydrated and how much I froze. I forgot that I couldn’t just count at the end because things get eaten as you go along. I feel like a record would help me better line up how many plants I need with how much I need to preserve. I plan on making a chart in advance to make that easier.

  2. Make a better attempt at buying produce locally where my garden falls short. I often wish I had more garden space. Perhaps I will always wish for that?! Someday the ultimate goal is to eat 90% of our produce, both fruit and vegetables, from the garden. Even though I get a little more efficient with the space I have each year, living where we are now, it’s not going to happen. I’ve been really inspired to preserve each fruit and vegetable in it’s season when it is fresh and abundant. Did you know that on average food travels 1500 miles to get to your plate? I don’t want to support those numbers. This year I want to put up food from my garden and locally, then shop from my basement in the winter.
